Nature remains untouched here. The minimum facilities are in place to allow tourists to walk around safely, but as it is regulated as a national scenic spot, there are no man-made structures that would spoil the scenery. It offers a view that has remained unchanged since time immemorial.

France’s highly-respected "Guide bleu travel guide series" awarded Sandankyo Gorge its highest rating of three stars, putting it on a par with Hiroshima’s two World Heritage sites, Miyajima and the Atomic bomb Dome. In 1917, photographer Kuma Nampo was looking for a subject for his photographs when he set foot in Sandankyo Gorge and found Sandankyo’s landscape reminiscent of traditional “landscape painting”. He and his friends worked hard to preserve the natural and cultural values of Sandankyo.

Conveniently located 80mins by car from Hiroshima Station and Hiroshima Airport.
Although it is often thought of as a remote place, it is accessible within 80 minutes from Hiroshima's city center or airport. Therefore, it is easy to include this gorge in your itinerary to sightsee Miyajima and the Atomic Bomb Dome. There are famous ski resorts and Tanada rice terraces nearby, so it's a good place to use as a base for sightseeing.
